Lucas Herbert entered the second round of the Open Championship five shots off the lead and sitting on the cut line.

After just nine holes, though, Herbert found himself on 59 watch as the Australian golfer carded six birdies on his opening nine holes to move to six-under for the tournament and tied for the lead. After finding two more birdies on No. 11 and No. 12, he took the outright lead and looked to be on course for a major record.

Herbert closed his round with a bogey on No. 18, which left ultimately left him disappointed with what could have been – and yet still proud of his achievement.

"I'm absolutely disappointed, and at the same time, so proud of today," Herbert said. "[I'm] very, very proud to put my name on that list of guys that have shot 62 in a major championship. So it's kind of holding two emotions there at the same time.

"It's a tricky one, and I'm sure once the dust settles, I'll be able to sort of decompress it a little bit. Right now, I've sort of got both going on, and it's a pretty good problem to have too, to be disappointed you shot 62."

Following his stellar round, Herbert now holds the lead by two shots over Cameron Young and Jackson Suber.
