Patrick Reed is one of the more unsung Masters champions in recent years, and he is back chasing a second green jacket in 2025.
On paper, Reed got his tournament off to a good start. The 2018 champion carded a 1-under 71 after teeing off in the morning wave on Thursday and will have a very good chance to be in the hunt on the weekend if he can keep scoring like that.
Don't tell Reed that. He was livid with his play after the round despite a spot in the top 10 at the time he went into the clubhouse.

"Piss poor. Pretty simple," Reed said when asked how he played. "Hit it fine, missed it in the wrong spots, and putted like a blind man. I expected the greens, just from previous years when they kind of have that type of look, I just kept leaving putts short. I thought they'd be faster. Just kept leaving them a little short. When I finally got the ball to the hole, didn't have the right read. Hit the ball fine and putted horribly."

Reed had chances to have an even better score than a 71, but he finished the day with 30 putts and had a three-putt bogey on the fifth hole.
Despite that, there is still plenty for Reed to take forward after this round. He only missed one fairway, on No. 7, and still made a par. He was also fairly steady throughout the day and finished with three birdies to just a pair of bogeys.
Later today or tomorrow heading into the second round, Reed may be able to focus on some of those positives, but not today.
"I don't care," Reed said of his round of 71. "It's not good enough."
At least Reed knows exactly what he has to focus on heading into the final 54 holes. He wants to get back into the winner's circle at a major, and it's no secret what has to change from this first round in order to get him there.
"Ball striking wasn't a problem," Reed said. "The flatstick is on vacation and needs to kind of show up. It needs to get on a flight and meet me here."
