Madison Chock and Evan Bates — the highly decorated American ice dancing duo who are also husband and wife — were two of the most prominent figures representing Team USA at the Winter Olympics in February.

While they enjoyed another successful Games, winning gold in the team event and silver in the ice dance competition, the result was somewhat marred by controversy.

Chock and Bates finished just 1.43 points behind the French pair Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron, who received a significantly higher score from one judge in particular — a judge who also happened to be French.

Still, the couple added to their historic Olympic resume together, and Bates had the opportunity to serve as a flag bearer during the Closing Ceremonies. It was likely their final Olympics, with Bates now 37 and Chock 33, though that doesn’t necessarily mean they won't compete over the next four years until the next Winter Games.

However, the next major event — the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Prague, Czechia later this month — will no longer feature the duo, as Chock and Bates officially withdrew from competition and will be replaced by Caroline Green and Michael Parsons.

"I knew this would happen. Why are people leaving it so late? Tough for replacements to quickly train up," a fan said.

Someone else added, "My Beloveds will be missed..but..it certainly is understandable. I wish them only the best..Character is everything.

Another person wrote, "welp there it is."

"Now, this is interesting," a fan shared.

One more commented, "I hope this doesn’t mean what I think it could mean."

The growing speculation is that the duo could potentially be calling it a career. However, when asked about retirement following the Olympics, Madison Chock and Evan Bates didn’t provide a definitive answer.

“We’ve got a lot to be proud of and a lot to be grateful for because we’ve had an incredible career,” Chock said. “Sometimes that’s just how it shakes out. This is the story for us, and I wouldn’t change anything.”

“Right now, it’s really hard to say what the career plans will be, but TBD,” Bates added.
