The Houston Astros are currently fighting to win the top spot in the AL West with the Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners.

Due to this, the expectation is that the Astros will be buyers ahead of the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline. When noting that they have struggled with consistency this campaign, they should be looking to make multiple additions to their group.

One specific area that the Astros should be aiming to upgrade is their outfield. Because of this, they are now being connected to a notable trade candidate from the St. Louis Cardinals.

In a recent article for The Athletic, Chandler Rome reported that the Astros are interested in St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbaar.

"Still, a left-handed hitter is among the most prominent names being discussed within the Astros’ front office," Rome wrote. "St. Louis’ Lars Nootbaar is of interest to Houston, according to multiple sources granted anonymity for their candor to discuss ongoing negotiations."

With the Astros' outfield needing a boost, it is understandable that they are interested in Nootbaar. He would have the potential to be a good addition to the Astros' due to his solid all-around play.

Nootbaar would be more than a rental for the Astros if acquired, too. This is because he is under team control through the 2027 season. With this, he would be a low-risk addition for an Astros club that is not guaranteed to make the playoffs this year.

In 45 games this season with the Cardinals, Nootbaar has three home runs, 15 RBIs, and a .241 batting average. This is after he posted 13 home runs, 48 RBI, and a .234 batting average in 135 games with St. Louis during the 2025 season.
