The Toronto Blue Jays failed to agree to an extension with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. before his self-imposed Feb. 18 deadline, according to Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith. He is now slated to become a free agent next winter.

"They had their numbers, I had my numbers," Guerrero told Nicholson-Smith in Florida.

The Blue Jays have not had much luck in free agency, often missing out on players to more desirable destinations. They run a real risk of losing him for no return. They could look to trade him now or at the deadline if they feel he will walk next winter. FanSided's Zach Pressnell proposed this trade that would send Guerrero to the Detroit Tigers.

"A deal for Guerrero would need to be loaded with a ridiculous amount of talent," wrote Pressnell. "This is exactly the kind of deal that could cause the Blue Jays to explore the idea of dealing their generational star."

The Blue Jays would be getting three of the Tigers' top prospects as well as a big-league-ready first baseman. Guerrero is a four-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger and Gold Glover. Even with just one year of control, he will demand a haul.

The Tigers sold at the trade deadline last season and went on a run for the ages. They were one win away from an American League Championship Series berth. This offseason they brought back Jack Flaherty, who they traded, and signed Gleyber Torres, Tommy Kahnle and Alex Cobb. Adding a player like Guerrero could make them a real threat in the American League.
