Just when it looked as though the Toronto Blue Jays would have one of their best wins of the season, they quickly felt the sting of one of their worst losses.

After taking a 4-2 lead in the top of the ninth inning on home runs from Bo Bichette and Daulton Varsho on Monday, the Blue Jays' bullpen couldn't hold. Closer Jeff Hoffman was unavailable after being used with a four-run lead on Sunday, so it was up to Tommy Nance and Brendon Little to finish the game.

Neither could get the job done, as Nance allowed two baserunners and Little came in and allowed two more, including a two-run walk-off single from the Reds' Noelvi Marte.

Toronto's bullpen has been a disaster since mid-August, and Monday was the nadir, dropping the Blue Jays' lead to just 2 1/2 games over both the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox in the American League East.

However, manager John Schneider's postgame message to the media was one of confidence in his bullpen.

"I'm always going to have confidence in them," Schneider said, per Mike Petraglia of MLB.com. "I mean, we're at this point in the season, and we've gotten here because of everyone on the team."

The Blue Jays will have to quickly flush the loss to Cincinnati, because the schedule only gets trickier from here. Toronto's next two series are against the aforementioned Yankees and the AL West-leading Houston Astros.

"I've said it before: This group is so good at moving on to the next thing, whether it's inning by inning -- which we saw in the ninth inning -- or day by day, you come ready to play tomorrow," Schneider said, per Petraglia.
