The Pittsburgh Pirates are one of many teams in the National League fighting for a playoff spot in the wild card race.
The Pirates currently trail the Arizona Diamondbacks by just two games for the final wild card spot in the NL. Because of this, they should be looking to add to their roster ahead of the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline.
One of the Pirates' top needs is another impactful outfielder. Due to this, they are now being viewed as a potential fit for a notable outfielder from the Toronto Blue Jays.

In a recent article for The Athletic, Jim Bowden named Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho as a "perfect" trade target for the Pirates.
"If the Blue Jays decide to sell, Varsho would be the perfect trade target for the Buccos," Bowden wrote. "He is a Gold Glove-caliber defender in center field, which is something the Pirates’ pitching staff desperately needs."

With the Pirates' outfield needing a boost, it would make a lot of sense for them to make a push for Varsho. He would have the potential to be a strong addition to their roster as they look to get into the playoffs.
If the Pirates acquired Varsho, he would offer them another option for the front half of their batting order. From 2022 to 2025, the seven-year veteran hit at least 18 home runs. This included him hitting a career-high 27 home runs in 2022 with the Diamondbacks and 20 in only 71 games last season.
Varsho would also give the Pirates a player who came just one win away from winning the World Series with the Blue Jays last year, so he has playoff experience.
With all of this, Varsho could be a very good pickup for the Pirates if acquired. Let's see if they make a push for him from here.
