The Atlanta Braves used a patently absurd amount of pitchers this past season, which led to them saying a lot of goodbyes this winter.

All told, Atlanta used 46 pitchers, tying a major league record. Many were castoffs from other organizations who were eligible to elect minor-league free agency at the end of the season, a group that included former Texas Rangers World Series champion Dane Dunning.

Dunning, who the Braves acquired for right-handed pitcher José Ruiz in July, was constantly shuffled between Triple-A and the majors down the stretch. He elected free agency on Oct. 2, and while he made sense for a lot of teams as a rebound candidate, he and the Braves proved not to be a fit moving forward.

On Thursday, Dunning agreed to a minor-league deal with the Seattle Mariners, according to a report from MassLive's Chris Cotillo. The 31-year-old will have a shot to compete for a job in spring training.

Dunning has had a rough couple of seasons, after playing a key role on the 2023 Rangers team that won the first World Series in franchise history. He was Texas' leader in innings pitched during that regular season (173 2/3) and put up a 12-7 record and 2.7 bWAR.

Only a year and a half after lifting the World Series trophy, Dunning found himself designated for assignment last spring after just one major league appearance. He wound up pitching 20 2/3 innings between Texas and Atlanta, with a 6.97 ERA and 21 strikeouts to seven walks.

The Braves still appear to be one starter away from a complete rotation, but Dunning doesn't project to be a surefire major leaguer this season, so it would make sense if the Mariners showed more interest in him as a potential swingman or Triple-A starter.
