If Brayan Bello is going to see game action during spring training, he won't do so before clearing a major hurdle later this week.

Bello has been sidelined since the start of spring draining due to a shoulder injury. He underwent an apparently successful strength test last weekend, clearing the way for a critical bullpen session scheduled for Friday.

"That bullpen is huge on Friday," Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters on Monday, via The Boston Globe's Pete Abraham.

Time is running out for Bello to put in the work required to be ready for Boston's season opener, which is scheduled for March 27 against the Texas Rangers.

With Kutter Crawford also dealing with an injury that could sideline him to start the season, Boston would be down to just four established starters if Bello also isn't ready. And that group includes Lucas Giolito, himself coming off a significant arm injury that wiped out his entire first season with the Red Sox.

Should Bello, Crawford and Giolito all be unavailable to start the season, Boston would be forced to turn to the likes of Richard Fitts, Quinn Priester and Cooper Criswell to fill out the rotation.
