The New York Yankees are coming off of a disappointing season and could look to a disgruntled star from another letdown franchise to make a splash.
After taking a significant step back with an American League Division Series exit this season, the Yankees could be considering a dramatic change to the roster. And that might put them in a position to trade for Philadelphia Phillies superstar Bryce Harper, who is suddenly in the middle of rumors after an update suggesting that he’s unhappy with his current contract.
“I think this is a player that is angry about the contract he’s currently operating under,” the New York Post’s Joel Sherman said of Harper during an episode of the “Pinstripe Post.” “Would I be 100% shocked if Bryce Harper got traded this offseason? No.”

Sherman added that the Phillies might struggle to find a suitor for Harper, given the more than $150 million that he is still owed in his current contract and the fact that he could want even more years tacked on in addition. But that didn’t stop FanSided’s Christopher Kline from listing several top trade destinations for the superstar, including the New York Yankees.
“There will be two spots opening up in the outfield, in theory, as both Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham hit free agency,” Kline noted. “And even with a wonky fit, the Yankees are 100 percent going to poke around Harper if he becomes available. New York is never far from a bidding war and Harper’s bat would be a welcome addition behind Judge.”
The Yankees could clear a spot at first base for Harper by moving young slugger Ben Rice into the everyday catcher’s role and potentially sending Austin Wells back to the Phillies, who might be looking to move on from JT Realmuto. Harper has also expressed some willingness to return to the outfield.
However, moving on from Harper would mark a dramatic turn for the Phillies and no matter how unhappy the slugger might be with his current deal, it’s far from certain that the face of the franchise will really be placed on the trade block. If he is, though, the Yankees seem like a strong fit.
