It wouldn't be a New York Mets season without a little turmoil.

The Mets have been one of the most inconsistent teams in baseball this season, and after a 45-24 start, they've been one of the worst. After dropping the first three games of their series against the Philadelphia Phillies, the Mets fell back to just six games over .500 on Wednesday for the first time since April 18.

Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants have both crept within two games of the Mets in the wild card race.

New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor

...

New York is well aware of its plight, and its struggles have been confounding, considering all the talent on its roster.

However, shortstop Francisco Lindor, whose second-half slump certainly has been a big part of the problem, expressed faith in his club despite another drubbing at the hand of the Phillies on Wednesday night.

"We have a good team," Lindor said, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. "The bottom line is we just haven't played at the standard that we all have for each other here."

Manager Carlos Mendoza, however, was a little more blunt, seemingly perplexed after the team's fifth loss in a row.

"Nothing seems to be working for us," Mendoza said, per DiComo.

The Mets still have one more game against the Phillies on Thursday before they move on to play the red-hot Texas Rangers and the likely playoff-bound San Diego Padres.

It would behoove them to remember at some point that they are, as Lindor says, at least a good team on paper.
