When the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday came to agreement with free agent pitcher Michael Lorenzen, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Boston Red Sox were left with a dubious distinction. The Rockies' move made Boston the only remaining MLB team without a single free agent signing this offseason.

According to multiple media reports, the Red Sox have issued an "aggressive" offer to third baseman Alex Bregman, who played the 2025 season in Boston. ESPN baseball insider Buster Olney even put numbers to the reported offer: "a six-year, $171.5 million deal." But at least so far, it hasn't been enough and the Red Sox appear to be at a standstill with Bregman.

But Boston's inertia when it comes to signing major-league free agents does not mean that chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has no other signings in mind. According to media reports, the Red Sox have reached a pre-agreement with the No. 36-ranked (per MLB Pipeline) prospect in the incoming international amateur free-agent class.

The 2026 international signing period opens on Thursday, and that is when the Red Sox reportedly plan to sign 17-year-old Garielvin Silverio, out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the same hometown as Red Sox legend David "Big Papi" Ortiz.

According to journalist Francys Romero of Beisbol FR, the Red Sox will pay the left-handed hitting outfielder a $1.4 million bonus.

"Silverio stands out as an intriguing prospect and merits inclusion among the top players for the 2025–2026 class," Romero wrote. "He features advanced hitting ability with plus raw power. Over the past year, he has added noticeable height and strength, projecting as a corner profile with a power bat. Defensive development and overall explosiveness remain areas for improvement."

In its scouting report on the Red Sox prospective signee, MLB Pipeline called the 6-foot-2, 204-pound teenager a "physical specimen" known as "a supremely hard worker who has maximized his impressive physique to emerge as an exciting offensive prospect."

According to a report by El Emergente, a publication specializing in Latin American baseball, the Red Sox are expected to sign up to 20 international prospects next week, with the largest bonus of Boston's $5.94 million pool going to Silverio.

Because Bregman had declined a qualifying offer from the Houston Astros in 2024, when the Red Sox signed him as a free agent before the 2025 season, they forfeited $500,000 of their international pool money.
