Pitchers and catchers were set to report for the New York Yankees on Wednesday, and their starting rotation was not expected be at full strength right away.
Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón and Clarke Schmidt are all expected to miss the start of the season, so how does that impact the rotation until they're back? Max Fried, Luis Gil and Cam Schlittler figure to lead the group, and the Yankees have some options after that.
The Yankees traded for Ryan Weathers in the offseason, so he figures to have a spot in the rotation early in the year. Will Warren and Ryan Yarbrough are options to round out the group.

Yarbrough thrived as a starter last season, so he may be the best option for the Yankees to start the year in the rotation. However, Warren made 33 starts last season and may be better equipped to handle the workload out of the gate.
As a starter last season, Yarbrough had a 3.83 ERA in eight games. The Yankees went 4-4 in his starts, but outside of one blowup start, when he allowed eight runs, he never allowed more than two runs in a start. However, using him as a starter early in the year could limit his usage in the bullpen later when Cole and Rodón return. Early in the year, it would make sense if the Yankees' rotation looked like this:
- Max Fried
- Luis Gil
- Cam Schlittler
- Ryan Weathers
- Will Warren
When Cole and Rodón are back, Weathers and Warren figure to be bumped out of the mix. Cole, Fried, Rodón, Gil and Schlittler have the chance to be one of the rotations in baseball.
