As difficult as it was watching Edwin Diaz walk out the door this past winter, the New York Mets could take some comfort in the fact that their former closer hasn't contributed much to his new team.

That's cold comfort in an agonizingly lost season for the Mets, but they'll take whatever they can get in Queens.

Yet they might get a firsthand look at Diaz's illustrious return to the Los Angeles Dodgers' bullpen, with Dodgers manager Dave Roberts on Monday telling reporters "there's a chance" Diaz is back this weekend.

Edwin Diaz #3 of the Los Angeles Dodgers

...

The Dodgers' opponent this weekend? The Mets, of course, at Citi Field.

Diaz has been out since April while recovering from elbow surgery. The Dodgers haven't missed the right-handed fireballer. They have matched stride with the Milwaukee Brewers for the best record in baseball, and Tanner Scott has continued his late-game dominance with 14 saves and a .756 WHIP. So they've been just fine.

The Mets have been anything but fine. There's a legitimate chance of them finishing with the worst record in baseball and are in the midst of a stretch in which they consecutively face the Brewers, Dodgers and Atlanta Braves -- three of the NL's best teams. The good news is that even if they still had Diaz, it wouldn't make much difference, since they seldom hold a lead in the ninth inning. So there's that.

It would be so Mets for their ex-closer to leave, get hurt, then return just in time to shove it down their throats. Such is life for the blue and orange this year.
