The New York Mets could be in for Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, who has been floated as a potential trade candidate despite winning the 2025 American League Cy Young award.

This past season, Skubal was a powerhouse, proving to be a true workhorse of the Tigers, who rode him hard throughout the season. His stuff is elite, and he has become one of the best pitch mixers in the game.

Due to the Tigers' status as a small market, which could leave them unwilling to pay Skubal, they may end up shopping their ace before the risk of losing him for nothing becomes apparent.

Skubal is a free agent after the 2026 season, and this offseason is the last chance for the Tigers to get a valuable trade package.

Any team in need of starting pitching or teams that just want to upgrade their pitching staff will explore a Skubal trade this winter.

According to an NL executive, the Mets make sense for Skubal. “I think the Mets will go hard after him,” the executive told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. “They have to make the playoffs next year.”

The Mets lack a true ace in their rotation. Their best starters are David Peterson, Clay Holmes, and Sean Manaea, all of whom are valuable members of a staff, though none are a top-tier starter.

President of baseball operations for the Mets, David Stearns, said as much during the general managers' meeting.

“I think if a front-line pitcher, top-of-the-rotation pitcher is available, we're going to be involved in those discussions,” Stearns said, per Feinsand.

“There are limits to what we would do, as there would be for any player. But we do have the depth and quality of a farm system at this point that we can both have those players impact our Major League team in a real way and potentially trade some of them to get some really near-term help if that's available.”

Skubal makes a ton of sense for the Mets if the Tigers do end up shopping him, but the price will be steep.
