After reportedly losing Edwin Diaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Mets knew work had to be done to add quality to their bullpen.
The next-best target was former San Diego Padres closer Robert Suarez, but on Thursday he reportedly agreed to a three-year deal with the Atlanta Braves worth $45 million. This puts the Mets in a tough spot as the reliever market slowly thins out, and as of Thursday afternoon they hadn’t added anyone besides Devin Williams.
Missing out on Suarez (and Diaz) should be concerning for Mets fans, but this latest report from insider Jon Heyman should be even more concerning for them.

"Mets only discussed concepts with Robert Suarez," Heyman wrote on X. "They apparently weren’t anxious to pay more than they paid Williams. Suarez ultimately got $45M from Braves. Williams’ $51M deal is worth about $44M considering deferrals."
Now, most Mets fans are going to be questioning why Suarez wasn't really an option if he signed for less than Williams. While Heyman didn't elaborate more, it's likely Suarez and his agent wanted the Mets to go above $51 million for him to sign there. When that didn't happen, Suarez chose to sign with Atlanta.
However, it's going to be difficult for the Mets to sign another strong reliever for their bullpen with that financial constraint. They don't have to break the bank for the players that are left, but to try and nickel-and-dime their way through putting together a bullpen may not work out as they intend.
One thing for certain is the job just got even tougher for David Stearns as Mets fans become more frustrated with the way the offseason is panning out.
