The New York Mets missed the postseason after creating high expectations last offseason. The team failed to win on Sunday, securing a postseason spot for the Cincinnati Reds.

The Mets signed Juan Soto on the heels of an improbable run to the National League Championship Series last season. Soto's $765 million deal showed that the Mets were serious about being contenders for years to come, but failed even to make it to October this year.

Not only did the Mets sign Soto, but the team also brought back Pete Alonso on a short-term deal, going all-in on this season. After missing the postseason altogether, Soto reflected on the season.

"It's a failure," Soto said Sunday of the Mets' season in an SNY video posted on X. "Anytime you don't make it to the playoffs or win the championship, it's a failure. That's how we are going to look at it, and that's how we are going to go through things in the offseason."

Soto has won a World Series with the Washington Nationals and went to the World Series last season with the New York Yankees. Joining forces with Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso on a team that fell just short of the Fall Classic last year yielded massive expectations.

Soto's comments are a clear indication of what the Mets' expectations were this season. The team could now lose Alonso in free agency and faces some roster holes going into the offseason. The team could once again be aggressive, but this season will go down as a disappointment. The Mets collapsed in the second half and blew a division lead.
