Richard Lovelady had to be getting tired of constantly being shuffled around by the New York Mets.
Last season, Lovelady first signed with the Mets in June after his release from the Minnesota Twins organization. From then until last Thursday, he was designated for assignment four times, including twice before he ever threw a pitch for the major league club, and constantly rode the bus between Syracuse and Queens for the final three months of the season.
As it turned out, last week would be the final time the Mets would have the opportunity to cut Lovelady loose from the roster, as finally, the 30-year-old was claimed by another club on waivers. That club happened to be the division-rival Washington Nationals, who announced Lovelady's arrival via their official X account.

The Mets were Lovelady's sixth major league team, and he's hoping the Nationals will soon become No. 7 if he makes the opening day roster. He was drafted in the 10th round by the Kansas City Royals in 2016, and has also pitched for the Athletics, Chicago Cubs, Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays.
For the Mets, Lovelady posted 10 innings last season, allowing seven earned runs and three home runs. He struck out nine batters, walked four, and allowed 10 hits.
Lovelady has a total of 111 major league innings under his belt, with a high of 34 1/3 for the Cubs in 2021. He sports a 5.35 career ERA.
The Nationals and Mets are at different points in their respective paths to playoff contention, so it makes sense that a rebuilding team like Washington would offer a veteran like Lovelady with a fairly uneven track record a more realistic path to innings in the coming season. And if he gets into a game in a big spot, Lovelady might love to get some revenge on the Mets for making him constantly sit by his phone last season.
