The New York Mets have made three major additions in the last week, landing Bo Bichette, Luis Robert Jr. and Freddy Peralta. Robert and Bichette's additions could have major implications for Carson Benge.

Benge is the Mets' No. 2 prospect and was in Triple-A last season. With Robert slated to take over center field and Juan Soto in right, left field is the final outfield spot up for grabs. However, with Bichette at third base, the Mets are expected to give Brett Baty opportunities in left field.

Benge was expected to compete for an outfield spot this spring, but with all of the new additions, there was some doubt about that. However, David Stearns made it clear that the Mets will give him a fair shot to make the team in spring training.

"With Carson, I've been clear all offseason," Stearns said in an interview with Andy Martino. "He's got a chance to make the club. Robert's addition doesn't change that. We're going to give him a chance to make the club out of camp. It doesn't mean he is, but we'll give him a chance."

The Mets outfield is in a much better spot now than it was a few weeks ago. Instead of Soto, Tyrone Taylor, potentially a rookie in Benge and an inexperienced outfielder in Baty. The Mets now only have one spot in the outfield to fill with a player who has not proven themselves as a reliable big league outfielder.

Taylor is a great defender, but his bat leaves much to be desired. Baty can still be used in the infield and has not played much outfield in his career. Benge was great in Double-A and played 24 Triple-A games last season. With just one spot left to fill in the outfield, the Mets are not changing their plan on Benge.

A great camp could end up getting him on the opening day roster. The Mets are not opting to just roll with Taylor or Baty as the final outfielder now that they have Robert and Bichette in the mix.
