The New York Mets signed Juan Soto last offseason, on the heels of a run to the National League Championship Series. The Soto signing did not help the Mets reach the World Series, and the team needs more help.

Not only did the Mets not make the World Series, but the team missed the postseason altogether. The Mets had plenty of flaws last season, and the inconsistency at designated hitter was one of them. Mark Vientos and Starling Marte saw the most opportunities at DH, but neither was great.

Lucky for the Mets, one of the best hitters in baseball is available this offseason and could slot in as the everyday DH in Queens. Kyle Schwarber is on the open market, and ESPN's David Schoenfield tabbed the Mets as a "possible fit."

"Think the Mets would love to steal Schwarber away from the Phillies?,” Schoenfield wrote. “Addition and then subtraction from your rival. Would Schwarber leave the Phillies for the enemy?

"Players are a lot less loyal than we'd like to believe. Starling Marte was the Mets' primary DH and he's a free agent, plus consider: The Mets signed Soto and (Pete) Alonso had a better season -- and yet they still scored two fewer runs than 2024. It was an above-average offense, fifth in the NL in runs, but it wasn't a great offense. Adding Schwarber could take it to the next level."

If Alonso remains in New York, adding Schwarber would give the Mets an offense with four of the best hitters in baseball. However, if the team loses Alonso, adding a player like Schwarber becomes more imperative.

Since 2019, when Alonso made his debut, only two players have hit more home runs than him: Schwarber and Aaron Judge. If Alonso leaves, the Mets would be losing a huge part of their offense, but Schwarber is one of the few players in baseball who could actually replace his production. He will not be cheap, however. Spotrac projects him to sign a four-year, $99 million deal in free agency.
