The New York Mets are getting a better idea of what needs to be addressed in free agency. Many players have started making decisions on contract options.
Pete Alonso and Edwin Díaz are the notable Mets who have opted out of their contracts, but another Mets Veteran has elected free agency. Drew Smith's club option was declined by the team, according to SNY. Smith underwent Tommy John surgery in 2024 and signed a one-year deal for 2025. However, the deal also came with a club option for 2026.
Smith made his debut with the Mets in 2018. In 2019, he underwent Tommy John surgery for the first time. From 2020 to 2024, he posted a 3.48 ERA in 164 games for the Mets. His best season came in 2021 when he posted a 2.40 ERA in 31 games.

He had pitched in 19 games before needing Tommy John surgery in 2024. He had a 3.06 ERA in those games. He did not pitch at any level this year. His extended rehab likely played a role in the Mets declining his option.
Smith is a veteran with experience and may be able to find a team willing to give him a chance in the bullpen. However, after two Tommy John surgeries, it would not be surprising for the list of potential suitors to be limited. Meanwhile, the Mets will have plenty of work to do in the bullpen.
Díaz should be the top priority, but even if the Mets get him back on a new deal, the bullpen has plenty of holes. Trade deadline acquisitions Ryan Helsley, Tyler Rogers and Gregory Soto are also free agents.
