New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso opted out of the final year of his two-year contract that he signed with the Mets last offseason, according to MLB Insider Jon Heyman. Alonso is represented by super-agent Scott Boras, who represents much of the league's top talent.

Last offseason, Alonso was searching for a long-term contract that never arrived, but after leading the National League in doubles and hitting 38 home runs, his fifth consecutive season with more than 30, Alonso is back on the open market in search of the contract that eluded him last winter.

Even with a standout season from Alonso, the Mets collapsed down the stretch and missed the playoffs just one season after spending top dollar to land Juan Soto in Queens. After building up their bullpen at the trade deadline, the Mets fell apart down the stretch in a collapse that is sure to leave a bad taste in the mouths of fans.
Spotrac projects the All-Star first baseman to receive a five-year, $147 million contract this winter, placing him firmly as the third-highest value hitter and the highest valued right-handed bat available this offseason. The first base position is fairly thin this season, following Alonso, Yandy Diaz, and Josh Naylor; there is a very limited number of long-term contracts that could be handed out. This could lead to a highly competitive race for one of Major League Baseball's premier power hitters. With an agent like Boras, Alonso could find himself landing a higher-paying contract than he is projected to receive.
Free agency opens Thursday at 5 p.m. ET, and until then, the Mets can make a case to bring back Alonso before other teams can talk to him.
