A longtime radio host thinks the New York Yankees were too enthusiastic about clinching their ninth playoff appearance of the last decade.

The Yankees punched a playoff ticket with Monday's 8-3 win over the Minnesota Twins. While they'll play postseason baseball, the Bronx Bombers still trail the Tampa Bay Rays by 3.5 games in the American League East.

New York still held a champagne celebration in the locker room at Target Field. Chris "Mad Dog" Russo didn't feel the feat merited that much fuss for a prestigious franchise with 27 World Series championships.

"They celebrate because they made the playoffs as a wild-card team? Look at this. This is mind-boggling," Russo said on Wednesday's First Take. "Tampa Bay leads the division. They got a $100 million payroll. The Yankee payroll is $350 million."

Russo felt the Yankees should have conducted a more modest toast like the Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers.

"The Yankees went absolutely crazy," Russo continued. "They're in second place! It's a wild card. These are the New York Yankees, who have won one World Series game -- one -- since 2009. And they're gonna make a big deal about the wild card?"

Russo wondered whether the Yankees would celebrate again if they won the division and advanced in the playoffs. That's too many parties for the former WFAN personality.

"There's not five New Year's Eves! There's one," Russo declared. "I mean, the Yankees, that was so weak what the Yankees did. I could not believe, (Joe) DiMaggio in his grave must be turning over. I could not believe what I saw the other night. Making a big deal about winning a wild card in the American League that stinks, when seven teams get in. The American League ... somebody under .500 is gonna make the postseason, and the Yankees are taking their sombreros to the sky? Oh my God."
