The Pittsburgh Pirates signed 19-year-old Konnor Griffin to a nine-year extension on Wednesday, and ace Paul Skenes spoke on the payday.
While Griffin has been paid, Skenes has not signed an extension yet. He figures to become one of the highest-paid pitchers in history if he hits the open market. Many speculate that he will not be with the Pirates after he hits the open market, and a comment he made on Wednesday could hint at that being true.
“(Griffin is) going to be the face of the Pirates for a long time,” Skenes told reporters, per the Tribune Review's Justin Guerriero.

Regardless of how good Griffin is or can be, Skenes is the face of the Pirates as long as he's wearing a Pirates uniform. Skenes will be a free agent in 2030, and Griffin's extension now keeps him tied to the Pirates through 2034. If Skenes thinks Griffin is going to be the face of the franchise, it means he thinks he's not going to be around as long as Griffin is.
Skenes could just be being humble. However, it's hard to ignore the fact that the amount of money Skenes could be looking for is one that the Pirates do not typically give out. Skenes already has a Cy Young Award and is one of the best pitchers in all of baseball.
He has no real reason to sign an extension with the Pirates, so fans are not wrong to think he will leave in free agency, if he is not traded first.
