The Boston Red Sox have bolstered their rotation this winter with the additions of Garrett Crochet, Walker Buehler, and Patrick Sandoval. Plus, Lucas Giolito is expected to be ready to start the 2025 season after missing all of last season.
Although the pitching staff looks much better than it did a year ago, the Red Sox have yet to address their bullpen. In 2024 the Red Sox bullpen ranked 24th in MLB with a bullpen ERA of 4.39 and 25th in MLB with 299 earned runs. The Red Sox have also lost two key arms from the 2024 bullpen in Kenley Jansen and Chris Martin. Both had less-than-stellar years in comparison to their full careers, but their 3.29 and 3.45 ERAs, respectively, were on the right side of the bullpen average.
It goes without saying that the Red Sox need at least one shutdown reliever.

"The most-impactful closer on the market has yet to sign and teams are lining up for him but waiting for the asking price to drop," wrote Jim Bowden of The Athletic. "The Red Sox are the clear front-runners for (Tanner) Scott."
The left-hander posted a 1.75 ERA (252 ERA+) with a 2.3-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .179 batting average against, and a 1.12 WHIP in 72 innings in 2024. Scott is also coming off his first All Star appearance, after carrying a 1.34 ERA into the All Star break.
The addition of Tanner Scott would be massively important for Boston which, at this time, does not have a designated closer.
