Sonny Gray was a big reason why the Boston Red Sox made the playoffs during the 2026 season.

Gray made a massive impact for the Red Sox this campaign, as he posted an 18-5 record, a 2.72 ERA, and 149 strikeouts. With numbers like these, he was everything the Red Sox hoped he would be after they acquired him last offseason from the St. Louis Cardinals.

However, the Red Sox have now gotten a big update regarding Gray as their offseason gets underway.

According to the Boston Herald's Mac Cerullo, Gray's mutual option with the Red Sox has been declined. With this, the three-time MLB All-Star is now officially a free agent.

With Gray's mutual option being declined, he has also received a $10 million buyout.

With how well Gray pitched this season, there is no question that he is going to generate a lot of interest on the free agent market. He would be a massive addition for any team that is looking to strengthen their pitching rotation.

While Gray is hitting the free agent market, the Red Sox could still try to re-sign him. It would not be surprising if they did target him, as he was excellent for them this season. Yet, Gray will now have the opportunity to listen to what other teams are willing to offer now that he is a free agent.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see where Gray ends up signing in free agency from here. Multiple playoff-caliber teams should be in the mix for the veteran pitcher.
