The Boston Red Sox should be on the hunt for pitching help this offseason.
The Red Sox's starting rotation could use a boost, especially with Sonny Gray hitting the free agent market. Due to this, the Red Sox are now being predicted to sign a notable free agent pitcher.
Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report recently predicted that the Red Sox will sign pitcher Casey Mize to a one-year, $14 million contract in free agency.

"Mize could replace Sonny Gray in Boston's rotation on a one-year commitment. If he stays healthy and pitches well, he could be a qualifying-offer candidate next year," Kelly wrote.

Mize would be an interesting pitcher for Boston to take a gamble on with a one-year deal. He has shown that he can be a star when pitching at his best but has also struggled with consistency.
This was undoubtedly the case during the 2026 season for Mize. He was very good for the Detroit Tigers this season, as he recorded a 2.70 ERA in 16 appearances. However, he struggled immensely after being traded to the San Diego Padres, as he had a 7.46 ERA in 10 games.
Yet, when looking at Mize's resume, there is reason to believe that he can bounce back after his tough finish to the 2026 campaign. Keep in mind, he had a 14-6 record and a 3.87 ERA in 28 games for Detroit just back in 2025 as an All-Star.
Ultimately, with Boston needing another pitcher, they could do worse than an intriguing bounce-back candidate like Mize.
