The Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals will play a doubleheader Sunday. Under Major League Baseball rules, both teams are allowed to promote a 27th player from the minor leagues to provide extra roster depth.
Typically that player is a pitcher. Sunday the Red Sox promoted right-hander Hunter Dobbins. Chris Henrique of the Boston Sports Journal was first to report the news on Twitter/X.

Dobbins, 25, will be making his major league debut if he appears in either of Sunday's games against St. Louis.

Dobbins has pitched 311 innings in his minor-league career, compiling a 3.88 ERA, 23.8 percent strikeout rate, and 7.9 percent walk rate. He's pitched 24.1 innings at the Triple-A level, and was set to start the 2025 season with Worcester again.
Dobbins has started 61 of his 63 career games, but figures to be in the Red Sox bullpen after rain postponed Saturday's game against the Cardinals.

Dobbins' stay figures to be a short one. The "27th player" will return to the minor leagues at the end of the day.
The Red Sox took Dobbins in the eighth round of the 2021 MLB draft out of Texas Tech, where he missed all of the 2021 season recovering from Tommy John surgery. Dobbins made his professional debut in 2022 with Class-A Salem, making 17 starts and striking out 68 batters with only 22 walks in 69 innings.

Dobbins split the 2023 season between the advanced Class-A and Double-A levels. He combined to go 9-6 with a 3.67 ERA in 112.2 innings, with 122 strikeouts, 31 walks, and a 1.189 WHIP.
In 2024, Dobbins went 7-3 with a 3.17 ERA at Double-A Portland, allowing a 1.229 WHIP while striking out 98 batters in 105 innings. He was just as impressive in four starts at Triple-A, going 1-2 with a 2.61 ERA, and 22 strikeouts in 20.2 innings.
