The Boston Red Sox have a new reliever -- and a familiar one at that.
Boston on Tuesday agreed to a minor league deal with free agent pitcher Adam Ottavino, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman. The contract includes an invitation to spring training.
Red Sox fans should have fond memories of Ottavino. The crafty right-hander played for Boston in 2021 and was excellent for much of the campaign -- 3.46 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 52 innings through August -- before fading down the stretch as a heavy workload caught up to him.

Ottavino spent the last three seasons with the New York Mets. He posted a 2.06 ERA in 66 appearances in 2022 and a 3.21 ERA in 66 appearances in 2023, once again performing as one of the more consistent relievers in baseball.
The 39-year-old took a slight step back last season, registering a 4.34 ERA and 1.286 WHIP in 60 appearances. However, Ottavino struck out 70 batters in 56 innings, good for an 11.3 strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio.
The Red Sox have been open about their desire to add more bullpen help before the start of the season. It's unclear whether they'll stop with the addition of Ottavino.
