The Boston Red Sox are staying busy with the offseason now here.

As first reported by Sox Prospects' Andrew Parker, the Red Sox have traded shortstop Tsung-Che Cheng to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for cash.

This is the second trade that the Red Sox have made on the first day of the MLB offseason. This is because they dealt utility player Nate Eaton to the Athletics earlier on Thursday. Now, Cheng is the latest player that the Red Sox are parting ways with.

Tsung-Che Cheng

...

Cheng appeared in 14 games during this season with the Red Sox. During them, he posted one double, five RBI, and a .256 batting average. This was after he went 0-for-7 in his first three career MLB games during the 2025 season with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Cheng spent most of this season with Triple-A Worcester, though. In 94 games with the Triple-A club this season, he recorded eight home runs, 30 RBI, and a .241 batting average.

Now, Cheng will provide the Tigers with more infield depth with this move. The Red Sox, on the other hand, have freed up a spot on their 40-man roster by dealing Cheng to Detroit. It will be interesting to see if he can break out with the Tigers after being traded by the Red Sox from here.
