The Boston Red Sox have been linked to every major free agent this winter, and to a majority of trade targets as well. The Red Sox have bolstered both their rotation and their bullpen, but still have the lingering need of a right-handed bat in their lineup, and could use improvement in the field.
One of the free agents Boston has been linked to the most is none other than longtime Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman. "I believe what's happening is that the Red Sox are simply saying 'we don't think he's going to Toronto, we don't think Detroit is going to sign him, We're gonna take our chances that no one else will, and we are going to leverage this and negotiate as hard as possible,'" Rosenthal said on "Foul Territory." "The problem is, they still might not get Bregman, and we're not exactly sure whether the front office wants to commit to Bregman."
Whether the Red Sox's ownership is willing to financially meet Bregman's request, or even make an offer at all, is yet to be seen. Red Sox manager Alex Cora, though, has not been shy about his opinion of the two-time All-Star.
"I always envisioned Alex (Bregman) as a Gold Glove second baseman. His size, the way he moves," Cora said at Fenway Fest on Saturday. "We'll see where he ends up and we'll see where he ends up playing."
Cora served as the bench coach for the Houston Astros in 2017 and has since maintained a close relationship with Bregman.
