The Boston Red Sox season ended at the hands of their rival, the New York Yankees. The Yankees won Game 3 of the AL Wild Card Series 4-0.
With the loss, all attention is now on what the Red Sox decide to do with Alex Bregman. Bregman's three-year, $120 million deal has an opt out that he can now choose to exercise. After the resurgent season he had, he is reportedly a lock to hit the open market again.
The Red Sox can keep Bregman around, but his current deal is not going to be good enough. Bregman will likely be looking for a longer deal with more guarantees. Bregman spoke about his future and current mindset at his locker after the game.

"Of course," Bregman said when asked if he could envision himself with the Red Sox next season if both sides can come to an agreement, per a clip posted by NESN on X. "I'm not even thinking about that at all right now. I'm thinking about the game that just happened."
Since being named a back-to-back All-Star in 2018 and 2019, Bregman slashed .261/.350/.445 over the next five seasons. This year, he slashed .273/.360/.462 in 114 games. He looked more like the player he was early in his career, and showed he deserves a long-term deal with guarantees.
The Red Sox have the money to pay him after trading Rafael Devers and his contract. However, the competition to land Bregman may be stiff. The thing the Red Sox have going for them is that Bregman has continuously noted how he wants to play in Boston.
