The Kansas City Royals lost All-Star Kris Bubic to injury for the season and were searching for his replacement at the trade deadline. The Royals have been a mix of buyer and seller at this season's trade deadline, and after Bubic was ruled out for the remainder of the season, their starting rotation needed some help, and they found it in the form of a controllable lefty in Falter.

Falter has started 22 games this season for the Pirates and has been strong, posting a 3.73 ERA this season and a 1.182 WHIP. The lefty joins the ranks of the Royals for the rest of this season and beyond, as Falter is under team control until 2029.
The Pirates traded Falter but held onto Mitch Keller and Paul Skenes through the deadline, one more likely to have been traded than the other. Both right-handers are set to headline the Pirates' rotation for the future as the team continues to build an offense behind them. Andrew Heaney also remained untouched by Pittsburgh and will play out the remainder of his contract for the Pirates this season.
The Royals are prepping for a late-season run, and now they can round out their rotation for the rest of the season. The starting pitching market did not materialize as expected, and the Royals capitalized on their backup plan.
