Want to trade for Vladimir Guerrero Jr.? It's going to cost you -- a lot.

The Toronto Blue Jays' inability to sign Guerrero to a contract extension has created an uptick in trade rumors surrounding the star first baseman. Guerrero, 25, is scheduled to hit free agency next offseason and reportedly doesn't want to engage in contract negotiations after the start of spring training.

If the Blue Jays become resigned to trading Guerrero, they'd be wise to do so as soon as possible, as they likely wouldn't receive nearly as much in a deal near this season's trade deadline. But what would Toronto want in return for one of baseball's best hitters?

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon offered insight in a piece published Thursday.

"To even think about trading Guerrero, a package would have to include major leaguers and top prospects and exceed the value the San Diego Padres received from the New York Yankees for (Juan) Soto, league sources said," Rosenthal and Sammon wrote.

The Padres sent Soto to the Yankees in December 2023. San Diego received pitchers Michael King, Jhony Brito, Randy Vasquez and Drew Thorpe, as well as catcher Kyle Higashioka.

King went on to finish seventh in National League Cy Young Award voting last season, while Thorpe was included in a trade for Dylan Cease last March. Soto, of course, left the Yankees this offseason to sign with the New York Mets.

Potential trade suitors remain unclear. However, the Boston Red Sox are rumored to be Guerrero's preferred destination if he hits free agency.
