The New York Yankees will take on the Boston Red Sox in a wild card series starting on Tuesday. The series is a best-of-three, and pitchers for Game 3 could become a storyline soon.

The Yankees have Max Fried and Carlos Rodón lined up for the first two games of the series. The Red Sox have Garrett Crochet scheduled in Game 1, with Brayan Bello in Game 2. However, should the series be tied after two games, a winner-take-all Game 3 would decide who advances to the American League Division Series.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone has announced who his Game 3 starter would be, naming rookie Cam Schlittler as the probable starter.

Schlittler has made 14 starts this season. He has a 2.96 ERA and 84 strikeouts in his young career, and Boone is opting to have him go with the season on the line, potentially. Schlittler is set up to take the ball over reigning American League Rookie of the Year Luis Gil.

On the other hand, the Red Sox revealed that Lucas Giolito will not be on the wild card series roster. Manager Alex Cora noted that the Red Sox will make a decision on who will start Game 3 after the first two games of the series. As it stands, the Yankees are set up better than the Red Sox in terms of starting pitching should the series go to a third game.

If the Yankees sweep the Red Sox, Schlittler would seemingly take the ball in Game 1 of the ALDS. The rookie is set up to make a mark on the Yankees' postseason.
