After an agreement was first reported last week, the New York Yankees made their new contract with outfielder Cody Bellinger official on Monday.
Bellinger's five-year, $162.5 million deal has been the signature move of an otherwise uneventful winter for the Yankees thus far. But it was also seemingly just the beginning of the day's roster reconfigurations, as designed by general manager Brian Cashman and his staff.
On Tuesday, the Yankees trimmed their 40-man roster back down to its usual 40 players by not only cutting ties with the one necessary player, but one extra, so they could also toss in a waiver claim.

As the Yankees announced on X on Tuesday afternoon, right-handed pitcher Dom Hamel was claimed off waivers from the Texas Rangers. Meanwhile, New York designated outfielder Marco Luciano and left-handed pitcher Jayvien Sandridge for assignment.
Hamel, who made his major league debut in a scoreless one-inning appearance for the New York Mets in September, is a former third-round pick out of Dallas Baptist (by the Mets in 2021) with a reasonable prospect pedigree. He put up a 5.32 ERA for Triple-A Syracuse last year, but struck out 75 batters in 67 1/3 innings.
Luciano has never played a game in the Yankees organization, and teams seem to be continually claiming him off waivers this winter in the hopes of him passing through so they can outright him to the Triple-A roster. The former top prospect has also been waived by the San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Baltimore Orioles since the regular season ended.
Sandridge, similarly to Hamel, has one major league appearance under his belt, as the Yankees signed him to a minor-league deal last February. The 26-year-old was the Orioles' 32nd-round pick in 2018, and pitched to a 4.55 ERA in 34 Triple-A appearances last year.
