Luka Doncic has spoiled Los Angeles Lakers fans this season. A 40-point night used to be big news.

Now it feels routine, and he keeps finding ways to top himself.

Luka Doncic #77 and Austin Reaves #15 of the Los Angeles Lakers hold hands during a time out in the second half of a game against the Chicago Bulls at Crypto.com Arena on March 12, 2026 in Los Angeles, California.

Friday was another one of those nights. Doncic dropped 53 points in a 124-118 win over the Portland Trail Blazers. But when Austin Reaves was asked about it, the funniest part of his answer had nothing to do with basketball.

Reaves spoke with NBA on Prime after the win, in a clip shared on X by Luka Updates. The last time Doncic scored 50, he sent Reaves his highlights. So Reaves was asked if he expected the same this time.

“No, he plays golf now, so he’s going to send me something about golf,” Reaves said. “We don’t talk basketball much.”

Reaves did give his teammate his flowers first, though.

“Obviously everybody knows it’s insane. You know, you look up and he has 40 and he feels like he’s only, you know, got 25. It seems normal now and that’s not normal,” Reaves said.

The numbers back him up. Doncic is averaging 40.1 points through nine games. Wilt Chamberlain is the only other player to average 40 or more through the first nine games of a season.

This was his second 50-point game of the year, after he put up 52 against the Utah Jazz on Oct. 25. It also gave him four straight 40-point games, making him the first Laker to do that since Kobe Bryant in 2012.

The turning point came at the halftime buzzer, when his 62-foot heave banked in. Doncic then outscored Portland by himself in the third quarter. Reaves added 25 as the Lakers moved to 8-2.

As for golf, Doncic only picked it up in March, thanks to Reaves and LeBron James. Reaves is one of the NBA’s best golfers, so whatever clip lands on his phone next, he’ll probably have notes.
