Quarterback Daniel Jones keeps giving the ball away, and the Indianapolis Colts keep giving him the start.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen told reporters he hasn’t weighed a switch at the position after a 16-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 7. The defeat was Indianapolis’ third in a row and dropped the team to 2-5.

Pressed on his starter, Steichen pointed to the game plan.

“I have not thought about a quarterback change,” Steichen said. “I’ve got a ton of faith in Daniel. The game plan today was to go in and run the football. Obviously, at the end, he had the interception. That happens in football.”

That pick decided it. Trailing by six with 1:39 left, Indianapolis managed two snaps on its final drive before Vikings safety Harrison Smith intercepted Jones.

Jones completed 13 of 22 passes for 108 yards and was sacked four times. His 4.9 yards per attempt was the second-lowest figure across his 20 starts with Indianapolis.

Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores blitzed on 85.2% of Jones’ dropbacks, a single-game high for any defense since Next Gen Stats began tracking in 2016.

His own assessment was harsher.

“It’s my job to play well, to put the team in position to win games,” Jones said. “I gotta do a better job of that.”

Backup quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr., the No. 4 overall pick in 2023, now faces a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge and has one season left on his rookie deal.

Richardson brushed off any regret when asked about the case.

“I enjoy life,” Richardson said. “I don’t really regret a lot of things I do.”

Before the Colts fired him in October, general manager Chris Ballard gave Jones a two-year deal in March worth $44 million per year, with $60 million guaranteed.

The deal carries a $46.8 million cap hit in 2027, and the Sauce Gardner trade means Indianapolis won’t pick in the first round of that year’s draft.
