The Celtics have plenty of established talent, but every season brings a player who takes a step forward and suddenly becomes impossible to ignore. Heading into 2026, that player could very well be Hugo Gonzalez.
His rookie season offered flashes of what made Boston so into him in the first place. He brought energy every time he checked into the game, competed on both ends of the floor and never looked intimidated. Ever. With Jaylen Brown no longer in the picture, there's room for someone to grab a larger role on the wing. Gonzalez has the versatility to slide into different lineups, and that flexibility is something Joe Mazzulla values. The Celtics don't need him to be a superstar overnight. They need him to make winning plays, defend multiple positions and keep the offense moving. That's right in his wheelhouse.
He also got lots of attention during the Las Vegas Summer League. Gonzalez looked far more comfortable with the ball in his hands, showing he could create offense instead of simply finishing plays. Averaging 18.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game wasn't just a nice stat line. It was a glimpse of a player growing into a much larger role.

Then there's the part of his game Celtics fans are going to love. Gonzalez plays hard. He's strong for his size and also has the defensive instincts to make life totally miserable for opposing wings. Those kinds of players tend to earn trust pretty quickly.
Boston already knows what it has in its stars. The more interesting story might be the player working his way into that next tier. Don't be surprised if Gonzalez is one of the Celtics' biggest breakout stories by the time 2026 comes to a close.
