The Los Angeles Lakers are running out of bodies at the worst possible time. Star forward LeBron James has been ruled out for Tuesday night's matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder, adding another major absence to a roster already missing Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.

James was initially listed as questionable with left foot soreness, but the team downgraded him to out hours before tip-off. The decision reflects ongoing injury management for the 41-year-old, who has carried a heavy workload in recent games amid the team’s growing list of absences.

James has done everything possible to stabilize the roster. In Sunday’s 134-128 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, he finished with 30 points and 15 assists, including 22 points in the first half. That performance kept the Lakers competitive, but it also highlighted how thin the margin for error has become.

Now without all three of their lead playmakers, the Lakers are in even more trouble against a Thunder team that has dominated the conference. Thankfully for them, their playoff future is secured but in a tight Western Conference, the Lakers are less worried about making the postseason and more focused playoff positioning.

The Lakers currently sit in 4th with a record of 50-28 but they're only one game ahead of the Houston Rockets who are currently on a six game winning streak. If the playoff started today the Rockets would be the Lakers' first round matchup and these final three regular season games could determine who has home-court advantage.

A Critical Stretch Filled With Uncertainty

The big question beyond where the Los Angeles Lakers will finish in the standings is who will they have available for the NBA Playoffs. Luke Doncic is currently in Europe seeking specialized treatment for a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, with a recovery timeline of four to six weeks. That essentially takes him out of the equation unless the Lakers can somehow survive the first round.

Austin Reaves also is sidelined with a Grade 2 left oblique muscle injury and will be out for the remainder of the regular season. While the team gave no timetable for his return, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania that Reaves is expected to miss four to six weeks. That takes him out of the equation as well.

With that, even if James is able to tough out this left foot injury, he will be entering the postseason without both of his co-stars in what may likely be his last season wearing the purple and gold.
