The NBA Summer League has always been a place where players can change the conversation.

It's not the regular season, and nobody is hanging banners in July, but it is where young talent gets a chance to step out of the shadows. For some players, it's about proving they belong. For others, it's about showing everyone they might be ready for something much bigger.

Brooklyn Nets guard Egor Demin appears to be making the most of that opportunity. As one of the team's first-round selections from last summer's draft class, Demin entered the tournament with something to prove. He wasn't looking for a few highlight moments or a quick burst of attention. He wanted to show that his game was really, truly beginning to take shape.

So far, he's done exactly that.

This week, Demin looked comfortable on both ends of the floor, and while his scoring got attention, his defense might have been the most impressive part of his performance. He recorded four steals against the Sacramento Kings, and he was constantly involved, disrupting plays and making life difficult for opposing guards. That kind of effort tends to stand out because it can't be faked.

That is what makes Summer League so interesting. A player can arrive with questions, and then a few games later, people start wondering if they have been watching the next piece of a team's future. And with Demin, maybe that's exactly the case.
