Scoot Henderson has heard the questions since the day he entered the NBA.

Every young point guard does. Can he run a team? Can he shoot consistently? Can he live up to the expectations that come with being a top draft pick?

This season gives him another opportunity to answer all of them.

The Portland Trail Blazers are still building toward the future, and Henderson remains one of the biggest pieces of that plan. While his first few seasons featured plenty of growing pains, they also offered enough flashes to remind everyone why Portland believed he could become the franchise's point guard.

Now it's about putting everything together.

...

Henderson enters a pivotal season with plenty of motivation. As he continues working toward his next contract, every game becomes another chance to prove he's ready to lead the Blazers' backcourt for years to come. Talent has never been the issue. Consistency is the next step.

His speed still changes the pace of a game in an instant. Few guards attack downhill with the same combination of power and explosiveness, and when he's making quick decisions, Portland's offense looks noticeably on fire. The challenge has been finding that rhythm night after night instead of in stretches.

That's where experience starts to mean something special.

The game tends to slow down for young guards after they've spent a few seasons adjusting to NBA defenses, and Henderson appears to be reaching that point. Better shot selection, improved decision-making and continued growth as a shooter could completely change the way defenses play him.

The Blazers don't need Henderson to score 30 points every night. They need him to control the offense, create easy opportunities for his teammates and continue growing into the leader many expected him to become.

If those pieces come together, Henderson won't just have a breakout season. He'll give Portland something even more important: confidence that the franchise has its point guard of the future.

For a team still climbing back into the playoff picture, that kind of development could end up being one of the biggest victories of the entire season.
