The Mavericks don't need another player to come in and score 25 points a night. They've already got plenty of firepower. What they could use is someone willing to do the dirty work, bring nonstop energy and simply be a constant positive force.

That's why Morez Johnson Jr. feels like such an intriguing breakout candidate heading into 2026.

Dallas selected Johnson with the No. 9 overall pick out of Michigan, but his transition to the NBA comes with a built-in advantage. He's reunited with head coach Dusty May, who already knows exactly how to get the most out of his game.

The fit couldn't make much more sense.

Playing alongside Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg means Johnson won't be asked to carry the offense or force shots that aren't there. Instead, he'll be free to focus on the things he already does exceptionally well. Sometimes that's the fastest path to making an impact, especially for a young big man.

Dallas Mavericks rookie Morez Johnson Jr.

Johnson's motor is impossible to ignore. He goes after shots with purpose, gives opponents very few second chances and has a knack for creating extra possessions with his great offensive rebounding. Those hustle plays don't always make the highlight reel, but they should.

He's also expected to provide immediate paint protection, using his size, timing and physicality to make drivers think twice before attacking the rim. Add in his ability to finish around the basket, and you have a player who can influence games without needing the offense to revolve around him.

The Mavericks have their stars. Johnson isn't being asked to become one overnight. But if he embraces his role and takes advantage of the opportunities created by the talent around him, don't be surprised if he's one of the most pleasant surprises on the Dallas Mavericks roster this season.
