The Oklahoma City Thunder have suffered another significant injury setback, losing one of their most important players for an extended period just weeks into the NBA season.

According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Thunder center Chet Holmgren underwent treatment Friday to address a small patellar tendon tear and is expected to miss eight to 10 weeks.

The news comes at an especially difficult time for Oklahoma City, which has already been forced to navigate multiple injuries to key members of its rotation.

Holmgren had previously been dealing with right knee patellar tendinitis and missed the Thunder's last two games before Friday's update.

Now, the latest diagnosis means Oklahoma City could be without its starting big man until late December or early January.

The 24-year-old appeared in three games to begin the season, averaging 12 points, 9.3 rebounds and three blocks per contest.

His absence creates another challenge for a Thunder team that has already lost Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace to significant injuries.

Williams underwent surgery this week to repair a fractured left fibula and reconstruct damaged ankle ligaments following an injury suffered against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Wallace also required surgery after suffering a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

Both players are expected to miss considerable time, leaving Oklahoma City without three important contributors during the opening weeks of the season.

Despite those setbacks, the Thunder have managed to remain competitive, opening the year with a 4-1 record.

Reigning NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will continue carrying much of the offensive responsibility, while Isaiah Hartenstein figures to play an increasingly important role in the frontcourt.

The injuries could also create additional opportunities for Kenrich Williams and rookie center Aday Mara.

However, replacing Holmgren's combination of rim protection, rebounding and offensive versatility will not be easy.

The former No. 2 overall pick has developed into one of Oklahoma City's most valuable two-way players, making his health an important factor in the team's championship aspirations.

For now, the Thunder must find a way to maintain their strong start while navigating an increasingly difficult injury situation.

With three key players sidelined, Oklahoma City's depth will face a significant test over the coming months.
