The Washington Wizards will have to wait a little longer to see their prized rookie make his official NBA debut.

AJ Dybantsa, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, has been ruled out of Monday's road matchup against the Charlotte Hornets as he continues recovering from a sprained left ankle.

According to Josh Robbins of The Athletic, Dybantsa will miss his fourth consecutive game to begin the regular season after appearing on Washington's latest injury report.

The disappointing development comes after the rookie was previously expected to join the team in Charlotte, raising hopes that he could finally make his debut. Instead, Washington will continue exercising caution with one of the most important young players in the franchise's future.

Dybantsa suffered the injury during the Wizards' preseason finale against the New Orleans Pelicans on Oct. 16. He exited the contest during the second quarter and did not return.

Head coach Brian Keefe previously described the injury as day-to-day, suggesting the organization did not anticipate a lengthy absence. However, Dybantsa has now missed Washington's first three regular-season games, and Monday's matchup will extend that absence to four.

The 19-year-old entered the NBA with enormous expectations following an outstanding freshman season at BYU, where he averaged 25.5 points per game and established himself as one of college basketball's premier scorers.

Washington selected him with the first overall pick, hoping his offensive versatility and athleticism could help accelerate the franchise's rebuilding efforts.

His absence has forced the Wizards to adjust their rotation early in the season.

Bilal Coulibaly has started in Dybantsa's place, while young players such as Kyshawn George and Tre Johnson have additional opportunities to contribute.

For Washington, the priority remains ensuring that Dybantsa is fully healthy before introducing him to regular-season competition. Although the injury has delayed his debut, the organization has not announced a definitive timetable for his return.

That uncertainty leaves Wizards fans waiting for their first opportunity to see the franchise's newest cornerstone player take the floor.

With four games now set to pass without Dybantsa, attention will shift toward Washington's next injury report and whether the rookie is finally approaching clearance. For now, one of the NBA's most anticipated debuts remains on hold
