The Iowa State Cyclones took a bit of a step back from their 11-3 season last year, which ended with a 42-41 Pop Tarts Bowl victory over the Miami Hurricanes.

But after ending the year on a three-game win streak and finishing 8-4, Iowa State was sitting in good position to play in a pretty prominent bowl game.

But then head coach Matt Campbell bolted to the Big Ten, agreeing to an eight-year deal to become the new head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions last week. During his tenure in Ames, Iowa, Campbell compiled a 72-55 record with two Big 12 Championship Game appearances and two top-15 finishes.

Iowa State was hit with a massive fine by the Big 12 on Sunday after turning down its bowl invitation.

“The Big 12 Conference is issuing a $500,000 institutional fine to Iowa State and Kansas State for opting out of their participation in the Conference’s bowl pool,” the conference said in a release. “While the Conference acknowledges the difficult timing around coaching changes, the Big 12 is responsible for fulfilling its contractual obligations to its bowl partners. The Big 12 considers the matter resolved and will have no further comment.”

The Cyclones hired former Washington State head coach Jimmy Rogers to replace Campbell.

Rogers parlayed his two-year stint at South Dakota State, in which he went 27-3 with a Division I championship, into the HC job with the Cougars. In his lone season with the team, he went 6-6 before landing the Iowa State job.

“My family and I are excited to be joining the Iowa State University community and the Cyclone football program,” Rogers said in a statement. “Iowa State has been one of the nation’s top programs for the last decade and we look forward to building upon its upward trajectory. I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity that Jamie Pollard has given me to lead the Cyclones.

“From the administration to the alumni and current student-athletes, this University has everything needed to compete at the highest level in college football. I am honored to be given this opportunity and responsibility and cannot wait to get started.”
