In the old college football world, a five-star quarterback would be drafted and often sit on the bench for a year or two before learning the playbook and schemes and developing physically. Sometimes it could even take a full three years before that talented thrower made it off the bench to have a shot at being a full-time starter.
But that was the old era, and this is the transfer portal era.
As we are fully entrenched in the whirlwind that is the 15-day transfer window, some of the country’s brightest young student-athletes are weighing their options.

One of them just so happens to be a quarterback who might be one day a high first-round pick in the NFL Draft: Husan Longstreet.
Lincoln Riley is the man your son wants to sign with if they want to make it to the NFL as a QB, and though the USC Trojans still haven’t made the College Football Playoff, that fact still remains.
Jayden Maiava threw for over 3,700 yards in a difficult Big Ten in 2025 and had a chance to declare for the NFL Draft, but instead decided to re-sign for a final year under Riley to prep for his possible future as a pro.
Behind in the depth chart is five-star recruit Longstreet out of Corona, California, who has all the tools in his arsenal to live up to the names Riley has coached throughout his college football tenure.

As a freshman last year, with minimal playing time, he completed 13 out of 15 passes for 103 yards and added another 76 on the ground, totaling three touchdowns.
Longstreet was one of the top QB recruits of the 2025 class and has shown no signs that he couldn’t start for a Power Four school next season.
While he hasn’t entered the transfer portal yet, there are rumblings that he might throw his name in the proverbial hat as some quarterbacks are seeing $4 to $5 million or more paydays, like new Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby.
His older brother, Kevin Longstreet, a cornerback for the Trojans, recently expressed his intent to make a move in the transfer window.
If Longstreet does leave USC, he will become one of the hottest names on the market with several top-flight programs still searching for a star quarterback for the 2026 campaign.
The transfer portal officially closes on Jan. 16, 2026.
