The Bobby Hurley tenure in Tempe seems to be coming to a close.

According to a report from The Field of 68, it’s likely that Arizona State will part ways with longtime coach Bobby Hurley once the season ends. Hurley’s contract expires at the end of June, and no extension seemingly is in the cards.

Hurley first came to ASU in 2015 after leading Buffalo to an NCAA Tournament appearance. Given Hurley’s pedigree, those in Tempe were hopeful he’d develop into one of the industry’s brightest coaching minds.

The former NBA lottery pick spent a handful of seasons playing for the Sacramento Kings (including a brief stop with the then-Vancouver Grizzlies) before eventually entering the realm of coaching. Hurley’s fiery personality was on full display when starring for Duke as a player. That level of intensity was quickly seen with the Sun Devils for better or worse.

In 11 seasons with Arizona State, Hurley has compiled an 184-166 overall record (prior to the start of the 2026 Big 12 Tournament).

Hurley did engineer four seasons with at least 20 wins during his tenure. However, Arizona State only made the NCAA Tournament three times in his 11 seasons. He’s yet to win a tournament game as a head coach.

Arizona State should be an attractive job. The greater Phoenix area brings terrific weather among other perks. There’s not a ton of pressure to succeed given the fact ASU is thought of as a football school, as well as the reality that rival Arizona is the prominent program in the state. Playing in the Big 12 is something that certainly elevates the position as well.

Assuming Hurley does move on, it’ll be interesting to see whether ASU goes for more of an accomplished coach — or perhaps a younger assistant ready to emerge in a greater role.
