Boise State is 7-1 overall and unbeaten at 4-0 in Pac-12 play. They've won seven straight games while scoring 30 points or more in each of those contests. Their only loss this season came on the road at then-No. 2 Oregon in their season opener, and they lost by just a single touchdown. Their strong run has even pushed them to the No. 25 spot in the first College Football Playoff rankings, making them the only Group of Six team inside the selection committee's top 25.

However, the Broncos will need to finish the season just as strong if they want to secure a spot in the CFP, starting with Colorado State on Saturday in Fort Collins. Unfortunately, they will need to manage that game without starting quarterback Maddux Madsen, who ESPN's Pete Thamel reported will miss it while dealing with a knee injury. The team reportedly doesn't believe it to be too serious and expects him to return next week against Oregon State.

Madsen is a senior quarterback who has been a major part of Boise State's success over the last few years. He's developed into one of the more productive quarterbacks in the Group of Six and is in the middle of his best season yet with the Broncos. Through eight games, Madsen has completed a career-high 66.7% of his passes for 1,681 yards and 15 touchdowns with just one interception, along with 142 rushing yards and three rushing scores.

Madsen suffered a left knee injury during last week's dramatic 46-45 win over Texas State. He left in the fourth quarter and underwent an MRI, with head coach Spencer Danielson describing him as day-to-day. He had been listed as questionable leading up to Friday's report from Thamel.

Losing Madsen is certainly a setback, but the Broncos have a backup with some experience in Max Cutforth. Cutforth is a junior now in his third season at Boise State, and looked good against Texas State last Saturday, coming in off the bench and completing 8 of 13 passes for 131 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, helping lead Boise State's comeback. He's expected to start in Madsen's place on Saturday against Colorado State.

After the Rams, Boise State will host Oregon State next weekend and then San Diego State on Nov. 21. The Beavers will be the biggest test of the three and a crucial game for the Broncos to get to the Pac-12 Championship Game and potentially into the CFP.
