In his final game as head coach of James Madison, Bob Chesney admitted his team's performance against Oregon didn't live up to the program's standard.
“I thought our guys certainly played hard, and played hard through the entire course of the game. Just never really amounted to anything. The complementary the football that we’ve been playing all year just really didn’t show up,” Chesney said. “There were spurts on offense, there were moments on defense, there were moments on special teams and there were obviously really bad moments on all three sides of the ball.”
The Dukes suffered a 51-34 loss to Oregon in the first round of the College Football Playoff and never really contended in the game after falling behind 34-6 after the first half. James Madison lost more than just the game, though.

Ahead of the College Football Playoff, Chesney accepted the head coaching job at UCLA and took offensive coordinator Dean Kennedy and defensive coordinator Colin Hitschler with him to UCLA. The Dukes already hired former Florida coach Billy Napier as head coach, and he's working fast to reset the staff after a playoff run.
According to a report from CBS Sports college football insider Matt Zenitz, Napier hired Aaron Pflugrad as quarterbacks coach, Jireh Wilson as edges coach and Brandon Bailey as safeties coach just a few days after the Dukes' playoff loss.
James Madison finished the season 12-2.
